The Peanut Seller - nostalgia thread
|
A post from fellow WHOer "BritanniaPub" on another thread mentions the peanut seller on the old North Bank. He must be referring to the gap-toothed, slightly ginger-haired bloke who in the 60s and early 70s would toss bags of peanuts to the crowd from the edge of the pitch at half time. I remember that bloke well, because either side of half time he would come onto the North Bank (where I was) to watch the game, and get the crowd shouting if he thought the atmosphere was too quiet. Who else remembers him, and does anyone know who he was?

The more vocal 'PEANUTS PEANUTS' seller who used to wander round the ground was actually a Spurs fan. I bumped into him at Ilford Penthouse night club and yelled out the Peanuts!!He told me that going on holiday on the beach was a nightmare where all the Londoners would shout out PEANUTS !!! He said the all seater ground killed his trade. Strangely he still looked the same The good old days. I wonder what traits memories the youngsters will take with them today

Was also called Mr Modo as well. There was an old bloke who also sold peanuts who had a speech impediment. Woasted Peanuts! Going back even further and nothing to do with peanut sellers who was the old bloke in the south bank who had a trumpet or bugle?

I remember the old boy who sold peanuts in the 70s. As DaveT says, "Woasted peanuts!" He had a very accurate throw.

I also remember the old stadium announcer back then who had a strange way of pronouncing Frank Lampard (senior) - "Frank-er Lampard". Always used to make people chuckle.

I often think back to my earliest memories of West Ham, especially over the last couple of years knowing that my own young son will never experience anything similar.
My first game as a season ticket holder after the greatest Christmas present of my life (half season ticket) was the Oldham home game on boxing day in 1990, a 2-0 win, I think Morley hit both....as an 8 year old I remember the family enclosure was just next to the away fans. I also remember the foggy smoke filled bar inside the ground (reminded me of the working mans my dad would take me to - we still go there) and i'd get a hot dog while he had a fag and pint.
I miss it all, but there is nothing I miss more than the walk from Upton Park station to the ground. It might not have been the same East End world that my grandparents new, but it was real life, working class people going about their daily business. An irreplaceable feeling that our club will be chasing to replicate until the new Stratford generations no longer remember.
